On May 12, 2025, in game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, the Knicks were playing against the Celtics at Madison Square Garden, NYC. In the 4th quarter of the game, Jayson Tatum went down with a non-contact injury. He was in serious pain and couldn’t walk off the court under his own power. Tatum suffered a torn achilles injury during the game, which usually sidelines players for 9-12 months. There are rumors that he could come back for the end of the regular season, but they seem far fetched and the risk/reward on that is not worth it for the Celtics
Jayson Tatum is the star of the Celtics and has been the face of the franchise for many years. Losing him for a long period of time or possibly a full season will not only be devastating in terms of winning games, but it will hurt the morality of the team and the overall mood from the fanbase about the Celtics. He led the team in most statistical categories last year and is the clear number 1 option on offense. Now, that will switch to Jaylen Brown, who has not proved to be a reliable superstar on a contending team. I believe they will struggle tremendously this season and might even fall below .500 when the season ends.
In addition, Tatum has been the guy that the Celtics have been able to rely on in any situation to go get a basket and put the ball in his hands, but he has had an elite roster to back him up. This season, the team looks much different and some of the key supporting players are not on the team anymore: Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford, and Luke Kornet. I think that the roster this year is far too inexperienced and young to have real success. Jaylen Brown and Derrick White are the only players who started in the NBA last year and the rotation of players this year has lots of people who either didn’t get playing time on the Celtics, or weren’t even on the team.
Lastly, Jayson Tatum brought the most energy and hype to TD Garden and to the entire fanbase. People went to and watched games in big part because of him. He is an exciting young superstar, who will hopefully be a Boston Celtic forever. He brought many eyes to the Celtics in the past 8 years and not only will the team’s success go down, but the interest and passion of the team this season will plummet.
