I am studying abroad in Copenhagen for five months as a part of my continued undergraduate education at WashU. My Jewish identity is fundamental for me as I observe the major holidays, enjoy participating in Shabbas rituals, and value my Jewish community at WashU. My experience abroad has given me the privilege of traveling to various European cities on the weekends. Some of my travels thus far have included Budapest, Porto, Lisbon, and London. While visiting, I find it interesting and important to connect with the Jewish history in these cities. Visiting historic synagogues and exploring the Jewish quarters in these cities has made me feel more connected to my European Jewish heritage. Although I don’t have an established Jewish community abroad, the opportunity to travel and immerse myself in a history I had not yet explored has made me feel closer and more interested in my religion.
